On June 22-23 the Sustainable Wine Roundtable held its first annual conference. The two-day online event brought together 250+ experts from across and outside the global wine industry to discuss the critical sustainability challenges facing the sector. Adapting to climate change in Alentejo

In this Sustainable Wine podcast Toby Webb talks with Iain Richardson, general manager at Mouchão Winery in Alentejo, Portugal. The Mouchão estate is roughly 900 hectares and of that only 43 are planted under vine. They discuss how the winery has been affected by climate change, what the estate is doing in terms of climate adaptation in the vineyard, lessons learned from the Wines of Alentejo Sustainability Program, and the potential of landscapes approaches in the wine industry.

Establishing an industry-wide sustainability framework: Learnings from the Sustainable Restaurant Association

In this podcast Sustainable Wine's Toby Webb speaks to Juliane Caillouette-Noble, managing director at the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA). The SRA was set up in 2009 to establish a common language and shared experience for the restaurant and hospitality industry. Starting out with 50 founding members, the SRA now works with around 12,000 kitchens throughout the UK.

They discuss the challenges of balancing the niche definitions of sustainability within a broader holistic framework, raising awareness of the sustainability issues throughout the wider value chain, consumer education, and the opportunities for cross-over between the Sustainable Restaurant Association and the Sustainable Wine Roundtable.

What does circularity and climate change adaptation in the vineyard look like in practice?

Sustainable Wine's Toby Webb speaks with João Barroso, Sustainability Coordinator for the Wines of Alentejo, and  Luís Patrão, vineyard manager at Herdade de Coelheiros.

Located in the demarcated region of Alentejo (DOC), the Coelheiros estate is over 800ha, consisting of vineyards, walnut orchards, and a cork forest. With its holistic and cross-sectional approach to sustainability, Coelheiros is one of the first wineries to have received the Wines of Alentejo Sustainability Program (WASP) certification seal.
